AIPM701 Course Structure

The Graduate Diploma in Executive Leadership comprises of two subjects studied via part-time distance mode, one subject delivered in a full-time intensive residential program and a Strategic Policy Review paper undertaken via distance and applied to issues existing in the student’s workplace. The policy paper builds on skills learned during the residential program and addresses a topic pre-approved by the student’s home organisation. The final subject is a mix of guided distance study and independent research.

Graduate Diploma in Executive Leadership
The Graduate Diploma in Executive Leadership is a specialised program for senior managers focusing on governance structures, power systems, innovation, accountability, compliance, ethics and public policy. The curriculum is designed to enhance research and critical thinking skills of senior leaders. Students are exposed to a wide range of new ideas, better-practice methodologies, and theories surrounding the twin areas of public policy and leadership. AIPM 701 endeavours to develop the skill level of students in respect of high impact public policy and the leadership requirement at this level of policy development and implementation.

Students are expected to have completed AIPM 601 or equivalent before entering the Graduate Diploma

AIPM 701 Graduate Diploma in Executive Leadership takes a strategic leadership perspective by focusing on the critical issues that will shape policing and emergency services organizations in the future. The program aims to help students achieve the following learning outcomes:

  • Broad knowledge and understanding of the historical and theoretical literature on leadership;
  • Superior judgment capacity and decision making skills;
  • High level executive communication, critical analysis and policy advocacy skills;
  • Capacity to apply flexibility and creativity to problem solving;
  • Political acumen and understanding of their external environment;
  • Sound knowledge of national and international best practice in executive management and leadership;
  • Ability to identify and analyse key future public safety and emergency service issues from a strategic leadership perspective;
  • Awareness of contemporary economic, social and technological issues impacting on executive leadership in the policing and emergency services environment;
  • Improved understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of their leadership style, and a capacity to develop and apply an effective self-improvement strategy; and
  • A broadened and more effective professional network.

Please note: To be awarded a Graduate Diploma, students must successfully complete the eight post-graduate subjects offered by the AIPM or their equivalent at another recognised tertiary institution. Four of these subjects are normally completed as part of AIPM 601 (the Graduate Certificate in Applied Management (PMDP/EDP)) prior to entry into AIPM701.
