AIPM701 Course Structure
The Graduate Diploma award, and the Graduate Certificate make up an articulated set of courses and credit is given in the higher level course for the subjects completed in the lower level course.
The Graduate Diploma of Executive Leadership is structured in two parts, part one being the nested Graduate Certificate in Applied Management (AIPM 601) and part two being the four AIPM701 subjects. Standard course completion entails students first completing AIPM 601, consisting of four subjects, as shown in the table below:
RPL - Recognition of Prior Learning
RCC - Recognition of Current Competency
AIPM701 comprises of two subjects studied via part-time distance mode, one subject delivered in a full-time intensive residential program and a Strategic Policy Review paper undertaken via distance and applied to issues existing in the student’s workplace. The policy paper builds on skills learned during the residential program and addresses a topic pre-approved by the student’s home organisation. The final subject is a mix of guided distance study and independent research.
AIPM701 Graduate Diploma of Executive Leadership takes a strategic leadership perspective by focusing on the critical issues that will shape policing and emergency services organisations in the future.
On successful completion of the program, participants should be able to:
- Review historical and contemporary theoretical literature on leadership;
- Analyse behaviours and skills required for effective strategic judgment and decision making;
- Apply high level executive communication, critical analysis and policy advocacy skills;
- Demonstrate flexibility and creativity to problem solving;
- Exhibit political acumen in professional settings;
- Synthesise and apply national and international trends in effective executive leadership to achieve organisational outcomes;
- Predict and analyse key future public safety and emergency service issues from a leadership perspective;
- Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of their leadership style and plan an effective self-improvement strategy; and
- Value the importance of an extensive and effective professional network.
Please note: To be awarded a Graduate Diploma, students must successfully complete the eight post-graduate subjects offered by the AIPM or their equivalent at another recognised tertiary institution. Four of these subjects are normally completed as part of AIPM 601 (the Graduate Certificate in Applied Management (PMDP/EDP)) prior to entry into AIPM701.
