About the AIPM
Australia needs top-performing police executives with great integrity and character. The Australian Institute of Police Management plays an important role in ensuring that this occurs, through the provision of executive development programs for police.
The AIPM was established 50 years ago and, since then, more than 6000 senior police officers have attended our executive development programs. The Institute is administered by the Australian Federal Police, and reports to a Board of Control that is composed of all the Police Commissioners in Australia and New Zealand.
The AIPM has been integral in developing police managers and executives through our management and leadership programs. The Institute also provides similar programs for the fire and emergency services, and volunteer organisations involved in public safety. Administratively, the AIPM comes under the corporate umbrella of the Australian Federal Police and all AIPM staff are employed under the Federal Police Act.
Institute programs have a reputation for outstanding quality. A major contributing factor to this quality is the involvement of senior executives from the corporate sector as presenters in our programs. Many of these people have very generously given their time to the AIPM for years because they want to make a personal contribution to the preservation of law and order in our community. They bring a wealth of diversity and experience to our classroom activities, and course members value their contributions very highly.
AIPM courses involve police from every state and territory of Australia and New Zealand. They also now include senior police from our neighbouring nations in the Pacific and South East Asia. There are Visiting Fellows from the policing jurisdictions seconded to the AIPM on 12-18 month terms, and currently there is also a Visiting Military Fellow from the Australian Army, and a Visiting Emergency Services Fellow from the Country Fire Authority (Victoria). In addition, there are Visiting International Police Fellows on our programs – these are senior police officers from organisations such as the US Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Metropolitan Police in London, the Scottish Police College at Tulliallan, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Hong Kong Police Force. This diversity brings an international dimension to our courses, and results in senior Australian police officers not only learning a lot about how other police operate, but also developing international professional networks that are essential in their future careers.
The Australian Graduate School of Policing (AGSP) at Charles Sturt University is co-located with the AIPM on its site in Manly. The AGSP offers a range of postgraduate courses in policing and currently has 468 students enrolled in these distance education courses.
