AIPM Course Admission Policy

AIPM courses are open to selected members of Australasian policing, emergency services, and other related agencies.  Entry into the Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma courses is by industry nomination: the participant’s parent organisation selects suitably qualified and experienced individuals to undertake AIPM courses.  Guidelines for what constitutes suitable candidacy for nomination are provided to agency representatives nominated by each jurisdiction to liaise with the AIPM, known as Liaison Officers.  Nominations are approved by the organisation’s Executive, and the final decision on course attendance is made by the AIPM in consultation with the organisation.

The AIPM does not accept nominations from individuals, nor does it accept payment of fees from other than the student’s parent organisation.

The AIPM suite of courses is scheduled at least 12 months in advance of their commencement.  The AIPM advises these course dates, as well as enrolment dates and admission information, directly to jurisdictional Liaison Officers.  Admissions information is available through the AIPM website and the AIPM Brochure and is also the responsibility of the student’s parent organisation to provide students with this information.

Students wishing to apply for an AIPM course may contact the Faculty Administration department for the contact details of the relevant Liaison Officer within their organisation.

Admission Requirements
Students must demonstrate that they have met the AIPM’s admission requirements prior to entry into the course.

Admission is determined by two complementary measures: academic study and industry employment (with successful performance in a senior role) as detailed below.

Graduate Certificate in Applied Management (AIPM601)
An applicant for admission to the Graduate Certificate course must have either:

    • Qualified for an award one AQF level below that of the GradCertAppMgmt (namely, Bachelor degree)

and/or

    • Demonstrated professional public safety/emergency services experience of a minimum of five years management and leadership, as part of a total industry service of at least nine years.  In cases where the student relies entirely on their industry experience and knowledge for entry into the Graduate Certificate program, or where qualifications are more than 1 AQF below the level of GradCert, the applicant must supply justification and supporting documentation in evidence of their candidacy.

Candidature is subject to approval by the student’s nominating agency, and in consultation with AIPM academic programs staff.

AIPM601 Student Profile
A graduate of AIPM 601 is typically at Inspector level, or equivalent (senior middle managers), in the early stages of an executive career.  Most organisations view the Graduate Certificate course as an essential step in the academic and professional development of middle-ranking officers.

Graduate Diploma of Executive Leadership (AIPM701)
The Graduate Diploma of Executive Leadership (AIPM 701) is structured in two parts, part one being the nested Graduate Certificate in Applied Management (AIPM 601).

An applicant for admission to the Graduate Diploma course must have:

    • Qualified for the award of Graduate Certificate in Applied Management (AIPM601) through the AIPM

or

    • Qualified for an award one AQF level below that of the GradDipExecLead which is a recognised equivalent of AIPM601

and/or

    • Demonstrated professional public safety/emergency services experience of a minimum of nine years management and leadership experience, as part of a total industry service of at least twelve years. (The applicant must supply a justification for entry to the graduate diploma program and supporting evidence.)

In order to qualify for the Graduate Diploma award, the application must have:

    • Qualified for the award of Graduate Certificate in Applied Management (AIPM601) through the AIPM

or

    • Qualified for an award one AQF level below that of the GradDipExecLead which is a recognised equivalent of AIPM601

Candidature is subject to approval by the student’s nominating organisation and in consultation with AIPM academic programs staff.

AIPM701 Student Profile
Graduates of AIPM 701 are expected to reach executive levels in public sector management.  The course attracts attendance by senior managers at Superintendent level or equivalent (upper executive level) throughout the Australian and international police and emergency services communities.

International Students
A number of overseas students participate in AIPM programs.  Overseas participants are required to fulfill parallel industry requirements and, accordingly, are nominated by their respective organisations.  Liaison with overseas nominating authorities is usually conducted through the Australian Federal Police (AFP), Law Enforcement Cooperation Program (LECP).

International students wishing to apply for an AIPM course can contact the AIPM Faculty Administration department for further information on the LECP application process.

AIPM guidelines specify that all overseas students must receive home government support and funding, and demonstrate, to their sponsor, an ability to speak and write English to IELTS level 6.5.

The AIPM supports equal employment opportunity, equity and diversity and anti-discrimination, consistent with AFP and national policies.
