Intelligence Management Development Program (IMDP)

The Intelligence Management Development Program (IMDP) (formerly called Leadership in Criminal Intelligence Program (LCIP)) is sponsored by the AFP and delivered through the AIPM. The program is designed for senior analyst, intelligence team leaders and the managers of intelligence business units. The program focuses upon the specific management challenges facing criminal and security intelligence within contemporary law enforcement environment, with a particular emphasis on counter terrorism.

The three key themes of IMDP include the role of intelligence units in the development of new ideas to meet existing and new challenges, the managing of our complex environments and the shaping of, and support of decision making.

The current IMDP format is based on the AIPM’s successful Police Management Development Program (PMDP). IMDP is delivered through the AIPM, as part of the broader AFP Leadership in Criminal Intelligence Program which also includes a number of AFP sponsored symposiums to be held throughout 2007 focusing on specific criminal intelligence issues. IMDP is also complemented bytwo other AIPM programs including the Leadership in Counter-Terrorism Program, a collaborative AFP, AIPM and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) program for senior police leaders responsible for counter terrorism, and the Regional Executive Leadership Program, a collaborative program for senior police leaders within South East Asia. Both programs incorporate intelligence as a key component within the development of effective leadership and decision making.

The program seeks to build upon the knowledge and experience of participating police and intelligence agencies. The FBI Academy in Quantico is currently building a similar program for the US jurisdictions. The close working relationship between the FBI Academy and the AIPM will ensure both program will support each other.

IMDP involves a combination of distance education and residential course work. Participants attend a two week residential, followed by a further residential involving the graduation ceremony. All participants attend the final residential, thus maximising the networking and sharing experiences. One residential stream may involve a two week residential component at the Jakarta Centre for Law Enforcement Cooperation. This stream will specifically focus on the involvement of regional law enforcement agencies.

IMDP graduates are currently awarded a Graduate Certificate of Applied Management through the AIPM. IMDP graduates are able to obtain credit for ongoing study with Charles Sturt University.
