International Senior Command Program
The International Deployment Group (IDG) as part of Australian Federal Police (AFP) continues to grow its capacity to conduct overseas missions in support of Government objectives and policy. In 2007, the AFP moved to formalise the preparation of future mission commanders through the delivery of a rigorous and comprehensive development program by the Australian Institute of Police Management: The International Senior Command Program (ISCP). One of the areas specifically focused on during ISCP is the preparation of AFP officers to lead these missions.
The inaugural ISCP was delivered in 2007 in two modules, across 3 weeks. Dates for upcoming courses can be viewed here.
The aim of the program is to develop in senior AFP officers the necessary capabilities to successfully lead peacekeeping missions and ensure their readiness to lead these commands. The ISCP is unique in the world of law enforcement, and during the program participants experience a number of activities that are designed to ensure they are well prepared for the rigours of mission command. The course is residential based and involves an individual blend of presentations and workshops, and a significant number of assessed activities.
The International Senior Command Program aims to:
- assist in further developing the AFP’s position as the world leader in the provision of high quality police officers and contingents for peace operations;
- assist officers to prepare themselves to command peace operations;
- provide development opportunities for officers against identified command capabilities;
- foster better relationships with other agencies and international partners involved in peace operations;
- provide presenters of the highest quality with innovative, relevant and contemporary course content;
- cater for participants of varying experience and background in leadership and peace operations;
- operate on the basis of self management of learning, adult learning principles and blended learning; and
- provide a feedback intensive experience for the participants.
