Graduate Certificate in Applied Management (Policing and Emergency Services)

The Graduate Certificate in Applied Management (Policing and Emergency Services) is a cornerstone program in the development of Australasian police leaders and is actively supported by all Australasian Police Commissioners. The Graduate Certificate is accredited by the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA). This program is developmental, highly applied and experientially based. Case studies used are based on actual events. There are opportunities for individual and group work, and exercises that help participants better understand their own behaviours and how they affect others.

The content includes strategic planning, project governance, problem solving, strategic management, change management, contemporary leadership, policy development, financial management, media management and leadership theory. On successful completion of the program, participants should be able to achieve the following course learning outcomes, within a policing and emergency services context:

  • Critically examine the leadership behaviours and skills required to mobilise others to achieve organisational outcomes
  • Discuss an ethical approach to decision making in policing and emergency services
  • Analyse environmental trends that influence the objectives of the policing and emergency services industry
  • Analyse and plan for complex management problems
  • Establish parameters for judging the effectiveness of corporate processes and performance outcomes
  • Formulate corporate improvement strategies
  • Develop processes to manage performance and results
  • Recommend executive level decisions, particularly in the areas of corporate planning, human and financial resource management and public accountability
