2010 Intelligence Management Development Program successfully completed

The 3 week Intelligence Management Development Program (IMDP) was successfully completed on Friday 22nd October 2010. The IMDP, which is sponsored by the Australian Federal Police (AFP), is similar to the Police Development Management Program (PMDP) but with an Intelligence focus. This provides the opportunity for those working with Intelligence to share their experiences and learn from one another in this constantly challenging environment. The 18 IMDP participants came from a cross section of local and international intelligence, policing and government sector organizations. The diversity of the group was far reaching with participants representing not only Australian Policing jurisdictions and AFP but also the Scottish Police Services Authority, Vietnam Ministry of Public Security, New Zealand Police, Australian Taxation Office, Australian Crime Commission and the Department of Immigration and Citizenship. The participants soon formed strong bonds and a strong sense of camaraderie.

Members of the AFAC “Developing Future Leaders Program” undertook the residential phase of the program at the AIPM, Manly between 9-13 August 2010. The group was enriched by a diversity of participants from Queensland, Tasmania, NSW, New Zealand and the Solomon Islands. The experience in the group created an ideal learning environment with a free exchange of idea regarding leadership, in an operational context. Whilst the group was initially divided into five syndicates, the groups were amalgamated to form two groups for one activity. These two groups participated in leadership challenges conducted at the Narrabeen Sporting and Recreational facility. During this event, it became evident that individuals within the groups had learnt more about themselves and also about the group dynamics in the short time frame they had been at the Institute.

112th Police Management Development Program (PMDP) completed

Between 6 July and 24 July 2009 the 112th Police Management Development Program (PMDP) was conducted at the AIPM. This residential component of the Graduate Certificate in Applied Management (Policing and Emergency Services) was attended by 26 participants from Australian police jurisdictions of Western Australia, South Australia, Queensland, Victoria, New South Wales, Northern Territory and the Australian Federal Police (AFP). Senior police from Hong Kong, New Zealand, Solomon Islands and South Africa, together with two participants from the NSW Department of Corrective Services complemented the discussions and debate with the Australian police.
The first week is always extremely challenging with the participants slightly anxious and ‘getting to know’ each other. Being away from home and family, together with possibly the first time to undertake tertiary studies can be a little unsettling for the participants. The role of the syndicate leaders, course mentor and AIPM staff is to provide support and encouragement and on the first Friday the team building activity at the Sydney Sports Academy, Narrabeen enables some ‘clear thinking’ time.

AIPM redevelopment gets Federal Approval

Federal Environment Minister Peter Garrett has approved with strict conditions the Australian Institute of Police Management development at North Head, Manly.
Mr Garrett said the approval decision followed a thorough assessment of the project's impacts on the environment, with particular focus on the little penguin, long-nosed bandicoot, the site's heritage values and the Sydney Harbour National Park.
"I'm satisfied that with the redesign of the project, the mitigation measures in place and the additional conditions I've placed on this, the project can proceed under national environment law without significant impact on the environment and the site's heritage values," Mr Garrett said.
The federal assessment looked closely at the project's potential impacts on the nearby little penguin colony, as well as the long-nosed bandicoot, both state-protected species.
As a result of this assessment, and building upon those matters considered by the State assessment process, seven additional approval conditions have been placed on the project. These new conditions significantly strengthen the environmental protections for the little penguin and long-nosed bandicoot populations, and for the site's heritage values.
