Visiting Fellows
The Australian Institute of Police Management hosts Visiting Fellows to assist in the delivery of academic programs. The officers are seconded from a variety of organisations and fulfill a variety of roles.
Roles
Visiting Fellows are officers with experience in leadership and management appointments. Their roles include:

of the South Australia Police at work
with the Solomons Islands Police Force
- Facilitator: During residential courses small group activities are guided by a facilitator.
- Assessor: Participants make oral presentations and submit written papers for assessment whilst in residence at the Institute. Assessors also rate participant attitude to training and interaction with others.
- Mentor: Participants have the opportunity to discuss options and ideas with a mentor that is outside the immediate sphere of the workplace.
- Instructor: Preparation and delivery of presentations, tutorials and small group activities at the Institute or in other places. For example, the Institute is presently involved in a project to deliver leadership and management training to the Royal Solomon Islands Police in Honiara.
- Researcher: The Institute contributes to the development of knowledge and acquisition of information in the law enforcement and emergency services industries.
- Training developer: Contribute to the continuous improvement of Institute programs, policies and procedures.
- Liaison: Attend meetings and conferences representing the Institute. Host visitors to the Institute. Participate in exchange visits to international law enforcement and emergency services academies.
Secondment
Visiting Fellows are serving officers seconded from their parent organisation to the Australian Institute of Police Management. The period of secondment is variable according to mutual agreement with the parent organization, but is typically twelve months. Visiting Fellows retain their salaries and conditions of service or employment contracts with their parent organizations, but are subject to Australian Federal Police codes of conduct. Relocation costs are borne by the parent organisation.
Program Visiting Fellows
The Institute receives support from stakeholders in the form of Program Visiting Fellows that are seconded for the duration of a residential program typically, two to three weeks. These officers have similar credentials and experience and fulfill many of the roles described above. Therefore, each academic program has a mixture of serving and Program Visiting Fellows in residence. The Institute is fortunate to welcome Visiting Fellows from all Australasian police jurisdictions, several fire and emergency services jurisdictions, and a spectrum of international agencies. The diversity of experience, opinion and organisational culture enhances the educational experience and networking opportunities to participants on residential programs.
