A comparative study of prior learning for serving police officers in Canada and England and Wales, UK: Bridging the academic gap

Increased globalisation of crime, multiculturalism, the rise of social media and technology, the integration of community based policing as a general law enforcement philosophy and higher expectations from the community, has all led to an increasingly complex environment for police officers globally. The article discusses how undergraduate education can strengthen and legitimise expertise. Essentially arming police officers with both soft skills and hard skills; behavioural and technical competencies, that they require to serve the public, prevent, and detect crime and advance their careers. The authors offer competencies such as team building, communication, critical thinking, and problem solving as fundamental to investigative success, as well as policing the complex multicultural and intersectional community.
