Docs and Cops: Origins and Ongoing Challenges of Evidence‑Based Policing

This article draws on links and similarities between policing and health professionals. In both cases evidence has indicated that increased accountability in the professions has benefited civilians. Technological advances means that evidence is readily available at the point of need. The author discusses the resistance to the uptake of evidence-based practice being the de-emphasis on practitioners’ intuition and experience as sufficient grounds for decision making. Making the suggestion that systematic change is required for evidence-based policing to be achieved.
