Opportunities and challenges
Financial intelligence and financial investigation are important tools of law enforcement, regulatory and intelligence agencies in Australia and worldwide, with applications that range from counter-terrorism to market manipulation. There is an increasing focus on partnerships between government agencies and financial institutions. Financial institutions are also augmenting their traditional compliance and risk management activities with intelligence analysis to detect and predict financial crime risks. This paper examines the landscape of financial intelligence and financial investigation in Australia and elsewhere, pointing to emerging opportunities and practical challenges in three areas: public–private sector collaboration, data analytics and financial crime law.
