Today UK residents are 20 times more likely to be a victim of fraud than of robbery and 10 times more likely to experience fraud than theft from the person. This article seeks to explore the recent and very significant changes in the profile of criminal offending across the world and how police forces are responding to the change in criminal activity and victimisation. Developments in technology have enabled offenders to behave in different ways; whether it is cybercrime, fraud, money laundering or the explosion of child sexual exploitation there has been a fundamental change in the pattern of offending. It represents perhaps one of the greatest challenges to contemporary policing and where the response of the police service has proved to be in the event, extremely variable.
