Leader development accross the lifespan: A dynamic experiences-grounded approach

Lui, Z., Venkatesh,S., & Riggio, R,E. (2021) | The Leadership Quarterly

Research has established that leader development is an ongoing process across the entire lifespan. Experience, especially on-the-job experience, has been increasingly acknowledged as a needed condition for leader development, 70/20/10 rule dictating that 70% of leader development comes from on-the-job experiences, 20% from developmental relationships and 10% from formal programs. This article challenges the traditional way of considering leader development as occurring primarily in the workplace and during adulthood. The authors look at leader development starting during the early years of life; with focus on interactions of multiple factors such as learning, practice, feedback and self-views. A holistic model of leader development becomes necessary, spanning contests, time and incorporates the process of leader emergence.
