Understanding Boundary Spanning
Dr Vicki Herrington and Dr Abby McLeod | Australian Institute of Police Management
The challenges facing our police are complex, the pandemic has given us a glimpse at the impact of systems on public safety. Climate change will have far reaching impacts on food security and migration. We are due for, and facing, another economic crisis. Then we are contending with technology and the emergence of the fourth industrial revolution. The authors, our AIPM Knowledge Director, Dr Vicki Herrington and Dr Abbie McLeod (2021) outline how global systems impact policing and how police, if they are true to their Peelian pledge of prevention, must engage, navigate and transverse systems. Boundary spanning it is the ability to create direction, align and commit across organisational groups in order to achieve a higher vision or goal. A Centre for Creative Leadership survey of 128 senior-level executives found that 86% believed it was “extremely important” to collaborate effectively across boundaries as a leader.
