From discretion to standardization: Digitalization of the police organization

This article looks at how digitisation of work processes can impact an organisation like the police. Gundhus (2021) identifies division of labour, specialisation and a focus on measurable and efficient process as management principles that digitisation impacts. As a result, traditional police discretion becomes more standardised, constrained, and de-contextualised, leading to a police organisation in which top-down steering and use of technology will ultimately lead to a narrowing of police discretion.
