Policing the future - the future of policing

AIPM Director Knowledge Dr Victoria Herrington and ACC Jackie Sebire | Policing Insight

"While COVID-19 created new challenges for policing globally, many of the key issues in play before the pandemic continue to pose major questions for law enforcement; Dr Victoria Herrington, Director Knowledge at the Australian Institute for Police Management, and ACC Jackie Sebire of Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire’s Joint Protective Services Command, believe a policing future which leans into complexity and embraces an expansive role is the way forward.

The last 18 months, and perhaps much of the next 18 months, have been for most of us a masterclass in complexity. We have faced the unrelenting complexity of a global pandemic, large-scale public protest and social unrest, and the intersecting impacts of health, security, social and economic factors that are interconnected globally, and twist and turn before our very eyes.

We’ve had the competing and opportunistic complexities of crime and criminal entrepreneurialism. While policing has been significantly impacted by being a key frontline responder to this public health emergency, the business of crime has also continued, and morphed, and different types of offending have been spotlighted."
