Policing’s New Vulnerability Re-Envisioning Local Accountability in an Era of Global Outrage

This article looks at police reform as a consequence of exogenous influences, such as enhanced audio-visual technology and social media platforms which enable audiences that are both diverse and global. Using Australia and the United Kingdom as examples, the authors argue that these viral images, such as the murder of George Floyd, have the capacity to collapse context and radically disrupt policing on a global scale. They urge analysis and debate on the complicated impact of images on violent policing from ‘over there’ to ‘over here’.
