International Women’s Day: Women in policing – the power to empower

Dr Sarah Jane Fox | Policing Insight

"As the world celebrates International Women’s Day, former police officer Dr Sarah Jane Fox, now a member of the Institute of Policing at Staffordshire University, highlights the key role that women already play in policing – and the efforts to address the gender imbalance in police services around the globe, as well as in wider society.

From challenge comes change, so let’s all choose to challenge

Previously in Policing Insight, I wrote an article that celebrated 100 years of women in policing in the Metropolitan Police Service and identifying the need to ensure that no one is left behind. The reflective piece also included my own experiences, that now span some 35-plus years in policing.

Comment was made that times have changed and noticeably for the better – that is, from a UK perspective; but as we are probably all aware, this is not replicated equally across the globe.

In 2018 I was fortunate to be part of an international policing event which was had good representation from female officers. However, it was very clear that some nations were further behind than even my early experiences from the 1980s in terms of equality and opportunities afforded to these officers.

As part of International Women’s Day I want to look in this article at the role of the United Nations (UN) Police and more specifically their ‘gender initiative’, which looks to increase the number of female police officers globally."
